Accident de voiture : les occupants se mettent en sécurité sur le bas-côté et appellent les secours

Car accident: what to do? The right reflexes

Even a minor collision causes stress, and stress makes us forget the right moves. Remember three words: protect, alert, help. Here is what to do, in order, after a car accident.

Right after the impact: protect

  1. Turn on the hazard lights and switch off the engine.
  2. Put on your high-visibility vest before getting out of the vehicle.
  3. Get passengers out on the roadside and move them to safety, behind the barrier on a motorway.
  4. Place the warning triangle if it can be done safely.

Alert the emergency services

If anyone is injured, call 112. Give the exact location, the number of vehicles and injured people, and any hazards (smoke, fuel, a vehicle in a ditch or in water). Do not hang up until you are told to.

Help without making things worse

  • Do not move an injured person, unless there is immediate danger (fire, water, risk of another collision).
  • Talk to them and cover them with an emergency blanket.
  • Never remove a motorcyclist's helmet.

If you cannot get out of the car

A deformed door, a jammed seatbelt: this happens after a violent impact. If there is no danger, stay calm and wait for help. If there is smoke or water, you need to get out: cut the seatbelt and break a side window. Read our guides how to cut a jammed seatbelt and car on fire: what to do.

After the accident: the accident report

Once everyone is safe, fill in the accident report with the other driver, take photos, note any witnesses, then send it to your insurer as soon as possible. See a doctor even if you feel fine: some pain only appears the next day.

For the day the door will not open

SafeCore Pro combines a window breaker and a seatbelt cutter, fixed in the console. It stays within one hand's reach, even after a crash.
