Chien enfermé dans une voiture en plein soleil, un passant s'approche de la vitre

Child or pet locked in a car: can you break the window?

In summer, the inside of a closed car in the sun heats up very quickly. For a child or an animal locked inside, the situation can become dangerous within minutes. Can you break a car window to save them? Here are the right reflexes.

1. Call emergency services first

Call 112 (or your local emergency number, such as 999 in the UK or 911 in the US). Describe the situation: the state of the child or animal, the address, the car model and number plate. Emergency services will tell you what to do and can arrive quickly.

2. Look for the owner and witnesses

Have the owner called in the nearest shop, ask passers-by to stay with you and take photos or a video of the situation: they will later show why you acted.

3. What the law says in France

Breaking a car window is normally criminal damage. But the French Criminal Code provides for a state of necessity (article 122-7): a person is not criminally liable if they act in the face of a current or imminent danger, to save a person or property, with a necessary and proportionate act. In practice, if the life of a child or animal is clearly in danger and help cannot arrive in time, breaking a window may be justified. Each case is assessed individually, and the rules differ in other countries: always follow the instructions of the emergency services first.

4. How to break the window without hurting anyone

  • Choose the side window furthest from the child or animal, never the windshield.
  • Aim at a corner of the window, where tempered glass gives way most easily.
  • Protect your hand and face, then clear the remaining pieces before reaching in.
  • Move the child or animal into the shade, cool them down gently and wait for emergency services.

A tempered-glass window is very hard to break with bare hands. A window breaker makes it possible in seconds. All the details are in our article how to break a car window in an emergency.

And to avoid getting there

Never leave a child or an animal alone in a car, even "just for two minutes" and even with the windows slightly open. And keep a window breaker with seatbelt cutter in every car: it may help you, or someone else.
