Seatbelt keeps locking: why and how to unlock it

A seatbelt that keeps locking is annoying every day, and dangerous if it refuses to unbuckle. The good news: most of the time, the cause is simple. Here is why it happens and how to unlock it.

Why does a seatbelt lock?

  • The safety mechanism is working: the retractor locks on purpose when you pull sharply or when the car is on a slope.
  • The strap is twisted or has wound unevenly into the retractor.
  • The strap is dirty: dust or sugary drinks stop it sliding.
  • The buckle is clogged with a crumb or a coin.
  • After a crash, the pretensioner may have fired and locked the belt permanently.

How to unlock a seatbelt?

  1. Let the strap go completely and let it retract, then pull slowly, without jerking.
  2. If it is twisted, pull it all the way out and flatten it before letting it retract.
  3. Clean the strap with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, and let it dry fully extended.
  4. For the buckle, gently remove whatever is blocking it. Do not grease it.

If nothing changes, or after an accident, have the seatbelt checked by a garage: it sometimes needs replacing.

Seatbelt jammed after a crash: cut it

In an emergency, there is no time to take anything apart. If the belt refuses to unbuckle and you need to get out fast, the solution is to cut it with a seatbelt cutter, in one move. Our guide jammed seatbelt: how to cut it in an emergency explains the method.

A child stuck in their seatbelt?

Stay calm, talk to them, and start by pressing the buckle button firmly while pulling the strap slightly towards you. If it does not give way and it is an emergency, cut the strap, always pointing the blade outwards, away from the child.

A seatbelt cutter always within reach

The SafeCore Pro blade is recessed in a slot: slide the strap in, pull, and it is cut with no risk of injury. The window breaker is in the same tool.
